Video: Shore Kite Fishing

Kite video How many times have you wished you could cast farther? Probably even spent a small fortune upgrading reels, rods, line, and other gear to gain a few feet. Surf fishermen in New Zealand face the same challenge, but their goal is to get cutbaits out well beyond the breakers and to the fish.

Get a load of the kite-fishing rigs these guys have developed. Although its origins are debated, most agree that these saltwater diehards were among the first to adopt the shore-based kite fishing technique to fight winds, gain distance and get into the strike zone of snapper, red cod, kahawai, gurnard and sharks.

While boat-based rod and kite fishing has been around for some time, shore-based kite fishing has yet to catch on in the U.S. So, be the first in your area to try it! Do make sure to check your local and fishing regulations before getting too crazy. Oh yeah, you might also want to call the FAA!
