Video: Will A Half-Ton Truck Crush This Reel?

A couple weeks ago, we broke the story on the crazy-light Revo MGX. Well, guess what? It’s got company in the flyweight category: Quantum’s new Exo baitcaster.
Although the reel's 5.9-ounce weight puts it close to the 5.4-ounce MGX, Quantum engineers got there in a completely different way. Rather than use feather-light materials, they essentially took an aluminum-alloy frame and cut out all the parts that didn't do anything.
They were left with an exceptionally strong, almost unbelievably light "exoskeleton"—38 percent stronger than magnesium and six times stronger than graphite-composite, according to Quantum. To back this up, they actually drove a truck over an Exo baitcaster. No harm, no foul.
And although our testing is just beginning, there looks to be a lot more to this reel than strength and weight (or lack thereof). Super cast control, a cool hybrid drag, powerful gearing—it's all there.
So, which reel will win the bout for the flyweight champ? Only time on the water will tell. |
