Video: Crazy Outboard Has GPS

"Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door." Well, the same could be said for outboard motors and fishermen. We're always looking for better fuel economy, increased power and range, greater torque, and decreased size and weight.

Well, while we're not so certain that the traditional gasoline outboard is going anywhere soon, you've gotta hand it to the marine outboard engine designers at the German manufacturer Torqeedo Inc.—who've addressed the above concerns and then some—all in an electric "green" design.

For starters, these outboards run on 24- or 48-volt lithium batteries. And it's one of the first outboard motors to feature onboard GPS, giving fishermen increased engine performance monitoring. Yep, gone are the days of fishing too far out on the lake and running out of fuel.

And check this out: Torqeedo engineers designed a prop that borrows from submarine technology. How's that for cool factor? Did we mention that we've got tackle boxes that weigh more than these things? And the bells and whistles only begin there.
Go electric   And save on gas!
