Video: Can You Eat Tijuana Trout?
 |
|
They live in the Los Angeles River. They get big ... really big ... and the locals call them "Tijuana Trout."
Not sure what we're talking about? Here's a hint: they love tortillas.
Still stumped? Watch Urban Angler TV host Mark Jury and local fishing expert/river advocate Carmelo target these mystery fish with various gear, including a fly rod, beer-can handline and ultra-light spinning stick.
But it's more than just another fun day on the water for these two. They're on a quest to answer the question "Can you eat Tijuana Trout?" And that requires a fish specimen for toxicity testing at a local lab.
Things soon get interesting. Let's just say that the whole ordeal involves public transportation, a taco stand and lots of hot sauce!
Here's a shocker: As recent as the 1940s the Los Angeles River supported a population of southern steelhead. That in mind, the organization Friends of the L.A. River continues to rehabilitate habitat to support future sustainable fisheries.
