Video: Of Mice and (Trout) Men

Video According to New Zealand fly fishermen, it's not uncommon to find brown trout blowing apart at the seams, literally stuffed to the gills with rodents. What better time to slap on that mouse imitator and pound the water! Beyond "must-see," this is gotta-see stuff!

Not long ago, any fisherman worth his salt would cut open stomachs while filleting fish to find out what they're eating. Few of us still do this, partly because we're so wrapped up in technology that we forget what worked for generations before us.

Not fly anglers. Many water whippers will employ small hand pumps to empty trout gullets streamside while still keeping the fish fit for release. Nymphs, flies, 'hoppers, minnows, and juvenile trout typically appear in the trout vomit. But mammal remains? Far less often.

But, empty the gullet of a trout that lives 8,000 miles from the U.S. and you might just find the half-digested remains of Chucky Cheese, Stuart Little and half the cast of Ratatouille.
