98-Pound Record From A Kayak

Kayaks are lightweight, relatively inexpensive and can get anglers into the shallow backwaters other boats can't reach. It's no wonder so many fishermen have embraced the exciting sport of kayak fishing. Imagine, though, catching a heavyweight world-record from one of these paddle craft.

That's exactly what Aussie Denis Harrold did while slow-trolling a Squidgy Slick Rig (a down-under version of a soft swimbait) on Lake Monduran in Queensland, Australia. The fish—a monster barramundi—tipped the scales at 44.6 kilograms (98.33 pounds) and measured 135 centimeters (53.15 inches), with a hefty 107-centimeter (42-inch) girth.

Besides being excellent table fare, barramundi are unique in that they start life as a male, then change into a female at about 4 years of age.

Though not yet officially recognized by the International Game Fish Association, Harrold's monster barramundi outweighed the current world record by more than 15 pounds.
