Video: Explosive Topwater Tip

Chris Lane

Like a good action-packed Hollywood thriller, frog fishing is all about suspense. You can never be quite sure when the water's gonna explode—and that unexpected jolt of adrenaline tells you to set the hook.

And that's the problem. Many anglers set the hook too early. They forget to drop the rodtip and watch the line, reel up the slack and then bring it home. Other times their timing is good, but they need a stronger hookset to penetrate the thick plastic of some baits. And sometimes, plain old bad luck steps in the way.

Whatever the reason, here's a way to increase hook-up percentages. Check out this video featuring topwater pro Chris Lane, a little known toad hook and rigging tips that push the odds in your favor.
