Collect Worms The Old Fashioned Way
 |
| |
It's tough to beat a fat, juicy garden worm or nightcrawler on your hook when you're trying to catch bluegills, trout, bass, walleyes—just about any freshwater gamefish.
If you love fishing garden hackle as much as we do, check out this video of a group of experts at they demonstrate a worm-collecting technique that your great-great-grandpa might have used.
It's been called worm-charming and worm fiddling, but these guys, who've been doing it for 50 years, know it as worm-grunting. And all it takes are a wooden "stob," a heavy flatiron and a strong back. How's it work? One theory is that the vibration it emits is similar to that caused by a burrowing mole as it hunts for an easy meal. This causes the 'crawlers to seek safety on the soil's surface where they become easy-pickins' for the grunters.
Grab some friends, a couple of empty coffee cans and a cooler of cold-ones. We bet you save more than a few bucks on live bait! |
